Getting a job after college is stressful enough. For one IIT graduate, the search has become much more urgent.A post by an IIT graduate seeking a job and temporary shelter in Hyderabad has gone viral on Reddit after the person claimed that their father had kicked them out of the house. With only enough money to manage for another two or three days, the graduate said they were looking for work that could help them become financially independent as soon as possible. The post appeared on the subreddit r/FresherTechJobsIndia with the title, “Does anyone need a live in maid? IIT graduate looking for a job + temporary shelter in Hyderabad, willing to start immediately.”The unusual title quickly caught people’s attention.According to the post, the graduate has a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialisation in Manufacturing Science & Engineering. But at the moment, finding the perfect career isn’t the priority.“I am NOT looking for a dream job right now. I need a foot in the door,” the graduate wrote. They said they had “very limited cash left” and realistically had enough money for only “2-3 days”. They were also worried about finding a place to stay, saying they were trying hard not to make “living at a bus stand” their first post-graduation accommodation.‘I am willing to learn, relocate and start immediately’The graduate said they were open to a wide range of roles, including engineering, manufacturing, operations, analytics, research, technical support and technical writing.Their listed skills include Excel, analytical problem-solving, documentation, CAD, CAE, FEA, manufacturing and operations analytics. They also said they were learning Python, Pandas and SQL to move towards analytics roles.Their previous internship and project experience was largely connected to aerospace manufacturing. According to the post, this included work on machining bottlenecks, process optimisation, capacity planning, fixtures and tooling, as well as efforts to reduce manufacturing lead times. They also mentioned academic and project experience in areas such as FEA, CAD, manufacturing systems and ESG/BRSR analytics. But none of that, they made clear, mattered as much right now as simply getting a job.The graduate said they were willing to relocate and start immediately. Hyderabad was listed as one of the preferred locations, along with Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Pune. They were also open to opportunities elsewhere in India and asked Reddit users for suggestions for safe, affordable temporary accommodation in Hyderabad.Reddit users offer advice and supportThe post soon turned into a much larger discussion, with users questioning how someone with an IIT degree could find themselves in such an immediate financial crisis.“Bro how r IITians not getting jobs n all?” one user asked.Another IIT graduate shared that they were facing a similar struggle and joked about being willing to take up maid work while looking for a job.“Join a coaching or tuition centre, live with a friend for a month,” another Reddit user suggested. They recommended using the person’s academic credentials to find temporary teaching work while reaching out to alumni and startups in Hyderabad.Others suggested contacting professors and asking about project assistant positions. Some users also offered direct help.“Not sure if this is a joke. But if this is a genuine concern then pls dm me with your CV and other details. Here to help,” one person wrote. The discussion eventually moved beyond this one Reddit post, with users talking about the wider difficulty some highly qualified graduates face while trying to enter the job market. One commenter claimed that even IIT graduates were struggling to find jobs and facing layoffs, while others focused on practical ways the person could find temporary income and accommodation. For now, the graduate’s post remains less about landing a dream role and more about finding a way to get through the next few days. And perhaps that’s what made it resonate with so many people online: behind the IIT tag, degrees and technical skills is someone simply asking for a chance to work, earn and stand on their own feet.
