Then the person performing the rite changes clothes and prepares for the rite of the ancestors.The process can vary greatly from family to family. In many homes, the food is sattvic, and families avoid ingredients prohibited by tradition.The ceremony may also include a charitable donation. Food, grains, clothing or other necessities are offered in memory of the dead.Some families keep appropriate food for cows, crows or dogs according to their ancestral customs.At home, Pitru Paksha Shradh is a spiritual practice of remembrance, not a solo journey. Though the pilgrimage to Gaya has its own traditional significance, sincere household observance is part of Hindu ancestral practice for those families unable to make the pilgrimage.
