Things people unknowingly do that make their homes smell unpleasant

A home can look perfectly clean and still have an unpleasant smell. Sometimes, the problem is not a dirty floor or an unclean bathroom but small everyday habits that people rarely notice. From damp towels to forgotten kitchen waste, several ordinary things can affect how a home smells. Here are five habits worth checking.

1. Leaving wet towels in the bathroom

Leaving damp towels hanging in a poorly ventilated bathroom can create a musty smell. Moisture gets trapped in the fabric, especially when towels are folded or left in a heap. It is better to hang them fully open and allow them to dry completely between uses.

2. Forgetting to clean the kitchen sink

The kitchen sink comes in contact with leftover food, grease and dirty dishes every day. Small food particles can get trapped around the drain or in the sink strainer, eventually producing an unpleasant smell. Cleaning the sink regularly and removing food waste can help prevent this.

3. Keeping the washing machine closed after use

Closing the washing machine immediately after a wash can trap moisture inside. This creates conditions that encourage mould and mildew, which can produce a musty smell. Leaving the door open for some time after use and cleaning the detergent drawer and rubber seal can help.

4. Allowing rubbish to sit for too long

Even when a dustbin looks relatively empty, food wrappers, vegetable peels and other organic waste can start producing unpleasant smells. A bin that is not cleaned regularly can also retain odours even after the garbage is removed. Emptying it frequently and washing it occasionally can make a difference.

5. Using too much fragrance to cover bad smells

Spraying room fresheners or perfumes may temporarily make a room smell better, but it does not remove the source of the odour. If there is a damp patch, dirty carpet or blocked drain, the unpleasant smell will eventually return. Identifying and cleaning the source is more effective than repeatedly adding fragrance.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
